If your washer finishes a cycle with water still in the drum, do not panic. Most drain problems have simple causes.
Check the drain pump filter
Most front-load washers have a small access door at the bottom front. Behind it is a filter that catches coins, hair ties, socks and lint. Put towels down and a shallow pan in place — water will come out — then unscrew and clean the filter.
Look at the drain hose
Pull the washer out gently and make sure the drain hose is not kinked or crushed. Also check that the hose is not pushed too far into the standpipe.
Check the house drain
If the standpipe or laundry sink backs up, the clog is in your home plumbing, not the washer.
Listen to the pump
A humming pump that does not move water may be jammed. Silence may mean the pump motor or the control has failed.
Error codes
Most washers show a drain code — for example OE on LG, 5C on Samsung or F9 E1 on Whirlpool. Look up your code in our error code library.
When to call
If the filter and hose are clear and the washer still will not drain, the drain pump or control likely needs replacing. Our technicians carry common pumps for major brands.
