Inland California summers are hard on air conditioners. A little preparation goes a long way.
Replace the air filter
A clogged filter is the most common cause of poor cooling and frozen coils. Change it every 1–3 months during cooling season.
Clear around the outdoor unit
Keep at least two feet of clear space around the condenser. Remove leaves and debris.
Check the condensate drain
Algae can clog the drain line and cause water leaks or shut the system off.
Test it before the heat wave
Run the AC on a warm spring day. If it short-cycles, makes new noises or blows warm air, schedule service before the busy season.
Program the thermostat
A few degrees higher while you are away reduces wear and energy bills.
