When dishes come out dirty, the dishwasher is usually not broken — it is struggling. Start here.
Clean the filter
Most modern dishwashers have a manual filter at the bottom of the tub. Twist it out and rinse it every few weeks.
Clear the spray arms
Remove the spray arms and check the holes for seeds, glass or scale. Rinse and poke them clear with a toothpick.
Run the hot water first
Run the kitchen tap until it is hot before starting the dishwasher, so the first fill is hot.
Use fresh detergent and rinse aid
Old detergent pods clump and lose strength. Rinse aid helps drying and reduces spotting.
Load correctly
Do not block the spray arms or detergent dispenser with tall items.
When it is a repair
If the dishwasher hums but does not spray, does not fill, or does not heat, the wash pump, inlet valve or heater may need service.
