Your lint screen catches most lint — but not all of it. Over time lint collects inside the vent duct, reducing airflow and creating a real fire hazard.
The short answer
Have the full dryer vent cleaned at least once a year. Large families, homes with pets and long or twisting vent runs may need cleaning every 6 months.
Warning signs
- Clothes need more than one cycle to dry
- The dryer or laundry room gets very hot
- A burning smell during drying
- The outside vent flap barely opens when the dryer runs
- Lint around the outside vent opening
Clean the lint screen every load
Also wash it with warm soapy water every few months — dryer sheets can leave a film that blocks airflow.
Use the right duct
Replace white vinyl or thin foil ducts with rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, and keep the run as short and straight as possible.
